How to Dress Your Baby for NZ Winter: Layering Tips for Kiwi Parents

NZ winters can be unpredictable — one morning it's crisp and frosty, by afternoon the sun's out. Knowing how to dress your baby for the season is one of those parenting skills that makes a huge difference to everyone's comfort (and sleep!).

Here's our practical guide to keeping your little one warm, safe, and comfortable through the cooler months.

The Golden Rule: One Extra Layer

Babies can't regulate their body temperature as well as adults, so a good rule of thumb is to dress them in one more layer than you're wearing. If you're comfortable in a long-sleeve top and light jacket, your baby needs that plus a warm layer underneath.

The Layering System

Think of dressing your baby in three layers:

  • Base layer — A soft, breathable bodysuit or onesie close to the skin. Cotton or bamboo fibre are ideal as they're gentle and moisture-wicking. Our Bamboo Fibre Zip-Up Jumpsuit is a great option for newborns.
  • Mid layer — A warm layer for insulation. Think knit rompers, fleece-lined suits, or a cosy sweatshirt and pants set. Our Hooded Knitted Wool Baby Romper is perfect here.
  • Outer layer — Protection from wind and rain. A windbreaker, down jacket, or waterproof coat depending on conditions. Our White Duck Down Jacket & Overalls Set is excellent for colder South Island winters.

Don't Forget the Extremities

Babies lose a lot of heat through their heads, hands, and feet. A warm beanie, mittens, and socks are essential on cold days. Our Baby Accessories range includes wool beanies, hat and mitten sets, and cosy socks designed for NZ winters.

Sleeping in Winter

Safe sleep guidelines recommend keeping your baby's room between 16–20°C. Use a sleeping bag rated for the temperature rather than loose blankets. Our Sleepwear range includes cotton-filled sleeping bags and zip-up pyjamas perfect for NZ winter nights.

Signs Your Baby Is Too Hot or Too Cold

  • Too cold: Cool chest or back, fussiness, pale skin
  • Too hot: Sweaty neck, flushed cheeks, rapid breathing, restlessness

Always check your baby's chest or back of the neck — not their hands or feet — to gauge temperature.
